Publisher field guide · Search visibility

Google Discover readiness, without the ranking promises.

Discover is an interest-based feed, not a position you can purchase or switch on. Build a strong publishing foundation and make every story worth opening.

Understand eligibility before chasing visibility

According to Google’s Discover guidance, content is automatically eligible when it is indexed by Google and meets Discover’s content policies. No special tag or structured data is required. Eligibility does not guarantee that a page appears in the feed.

Google Search, Google News, and Discover are different surfaces. Search responds to a query; Discover presents content based on a person’s interests. A page targeting “PublishRank”, “Rank Math”, or “Yoast” does not secure a Discover appearance simply by including those words. Focus on helpful comparisons and original editorial value rather than repeating competitor names.

PublishRank can be part of a publisher’s technical workflow, but neither this website nor a WordPress plugin controls Google’s selection. Paid search advertising is a separate product and does not buy organic rankings or Discover eligibility.

Use an image that belongs to the story

Google recommends high-quality, relevant images that are at least 1200 pixels wide, have more than 300,000 total pixels, and are suitable for a landscape presentation. Its current guidance recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio. Preserve the subject when cropping and avoid using a generic logo or text-heavy graphic as the preferred article image.

Allow large previews with <meta name="robots" content="index,follow,max-image-preview:large">. This is permission for a larger preview, not an instruction that forces Google to display one. Identify a relevant preferred image in article structured data or the og:image metadata, and make sure the image is accessible to crawlers.

Use descriptive alternative text, explicit dimensions, and responsive delivery. Load the lead image promptly and defer off-screen images. Unsplash can supply illustrative photography, but a stock photo should never be presented as evidence from a reported event. Identify illustrative material and credit photographers when using the Unsplash API.

Publish useful stories with visible accountability

  • Write headlines that reflect the article, not withheld context or exaggerated promises.
  • Provide original reporting, analysis, or an explanation that helps a real audience.
  • Show the author or editorial owner and make contact and publisher information easy to find.
  • Use accurate publication dates. Label substantial updates and corrections rather than changing dates to simulate freshness.
  • Link to evidence and relevant background coverage where appropriate.
  • Keep reading comfortable on mobile, with usable navigation and restrained interstitials.

Use our editorial workflow guide to turn these checks into a publishing routine. Use article structured data to describe visible facts consistently; markup should not invent reviews, authors, or publication history.

A practical search and Discover checklist

  1. Confirm the canonical article URL responds successfully and is not blocked by robots.txt or marked noindex.
  2. Inspect titles, descriptions, article headings, and internal links for clarity and consistency.
  3. Check the preferred article image, its dimensions, and large-preview permission.
  4. Keep the XML sitemap limited to canonical URLs you want indexed.
  5. Check structured data against visible content, using Google’s Rich Results Test where applicable.
  6. Use Search Console URL Inspection to review crawl and indexing status.
  7. Review Search performance and, when available, the Discover performance report. Neither report nor traffic is guaranteed.

Read the technical SEO guide and news sitemap guide for deeper validation steps. A sitemap helps discovery; it does not force indexing or rankings.

Measure readiness, not a promised first position

Track what you can control: valid output, useful content, fast delivery, relevant imagery, and a consistent editorial process. Observe what Google actually indexes and displays over time. Discover traffic can vary significantly, so do not treat it as a predictable replacement for loyal readers or search traffic.

This site provides crawlable guides, canonical metadata, large-image previews, and structured data. Submitting its sitemap in the owner’s verified Search Console account is a sensible next step after deployment. These improvements support eligibility and understanding, not guaranteed placement.
